Shift into gear
Posted By CrudMop 12:34:16 PM

Finally got on the ball and starting to make progress in finishing this damned bike up.

I ran the wiring and mounted up the controls on the bars, & ran the clutch and brake lines.

I finally got to working on the linkages for the shifter and rear brake.  The shifter linkage was a bit of an issue, because the RR rearsets I am using do not have the shifter arm as part of the rearset - on the RR they are mounted separately.  I toyed with a few different ideas on how to get the shifter arm mounted up, from welding an extension on the arm iteself and running it GP shift right on the spindle, to shortening the arm and using it on the old pivot - nothing seemed to 'work' the way I'd like.  Luckily, the spindle clamp from an F4i rearset I had in the garage had the same number of splines as the spindle on the CL so I decided to use that along with the actuator bar from the F4i.  I drilled out the inside of an old Husky 10mm socket, which is the perfect diameter to act as a pivot for the RR shifter arm.

And old stanless muffler bracket I had from a Micron can that used to be on my 636 ended up being good stock for a mounting point for the shifter arm.  I drilled out the basic location for each part with Fuzz's help, then used some vitamin jars to scribe out a nicer pattern on the stock.  Shot over to a buddy's house who had a band saw with the right blade to cut the turns, and mounted the piece of up last nite to check the fit.

Welp, it's running and full of fun - finished assembling it last night, and it's officially road worthy.

Helmety Helmet - Schuberth S1
Posted By CrudMop 9:53:43 PM

A couple of weeks ago, Fuzz started a conversation on a forum about helmets, who bought what, what they thought of it, etc.  I replied about the Arai Corsair I picked up last spring to replace a 3 year old Corsair, and had mentioned how I tried on a Schuberth S1 during the summer and how comfortable it was.

After that conversation, i started searching aruond for prices, etc, simply to see what they were going for and how cheap I could find one for - normally they go in the low $700's, but I found one at a small shop who, after some haggling, agreed to the bargain price of $295 with free shipping.  I couldnt' resist (and got a buddy to get another one along with me, to replace his current S1).

Man this story is getting long.

Anyway, the helmet is AWESOME.  Super comfy, very plush inside, the lower skirt seals out most of the noise, and NOTHING beats the flip down/up sunshade (I've always had a problem finding sunglasses that fit inside the helmet). It's a bit heavier than others, but nothing so bad that I wouldn't want it.  It's a little tight to get into, as the bottom of the helmet sticks out more than usual and closes the open area where wind and noise usually flow up into the bottom.  it's also got a quick-release buckle for the chin strap which makes getting on and off with gloves a snap.  My only complaint is that the strap adjustment is relatively short, and I'd probably like an extra half inch of play to loosen the strap just a little.

Boy, what a boring review.  Alas, a great helmet none-the-less.  Thoroughly recommended.

RS250 Project
Posted By CrudMop 9:49:14 PM

The world's GREATEST chick, FuzzyGalore, gave me something super special this year at xmas time.  For a long time I've dreamed of owning an RS250 - something about it has always touched 'that place' inside, and she's made it a reality for me.  Took a bit of effort to track one down in a condition that I liked, in the right year, etc, but we managed to findone and with the help of a dear friend, it's now here.  I'm in the midst of assembling it and making it ready for the road.

Photo album can be seen HERE
